“So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say?”
Luke 6:46 (NLT)
What a penetrating question. It is so easy to be a fan or spectator in almost anything today. With technology we can learn all about any topic we want. It is possible that we can talk all about our favorite sport, have a “fantasy team” and have never played a game. It is so easy today to be an “expert” and know all about something and yet, have no practical experience at all. Jesus knew this. He had many followers that did not know what His real message was. They did not see the significance of what He taught. They thought they could “follow” Jesus, even call Him “Lord” and not have to do what He said. Jesus called these “armchair” believers out and He does the same today. James said it well when he wrote, “Now someone may argue, ‘Some people have faith; others have good deeds.’ But I say, ‘How can you show me your faith if you don’t have good deeds? I will show you my faith by my good deeds.”’ Jesus has called us to follow Him. Today, let’s not just call Him Lord, let’s live as if it is true.
Jesus, I have called You Lord, and yet many times I have not lived the way You want me to. Forgive me, Lord. Help me live under the influence of Your Holy Spirit and do what Your word tells me to.
