“Saturday evening, when the Sabbath ended, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome went out and purchased burial spices so they could anoint Jesus’ body.”
Mark 16:1 (NLT)
How you come to the tomb of Christ makes all the difference. Three days had passed since the death of Christ and some of the women thought of anointing the body of Jesus. For whatever reason, they were not expecting Jesus to be risen from the dead. And neither were the disciples. How do we come to the tomb of Jesus? We come Sundays to church with our “spices” of worship, praising Him for His sacrificial death for us. But is that as far as we go? Is it possible that we come celebrating His death for our sins while forgetting His Resurrection for our life? Do we come to the tomb looking anoint His body but all the while forgetting that He is risen from the dead! We do this when we worship His sacrifice but deny His power. Paul wrote to the Ephesians about this very thing. He wrote, “I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms.” Today, ask God to add to your worship experience, the deep understanding of God’s incredible power, the power of the empty tomb.
Lord Jesus, so many times I come to You as if You were still dead in the tomb. Yes, I believe in Your death and the sacrifice for my sins, but I so often forget the power of the resurrection in my life. Help me, Lord. Open my eyes that I may see You in all Your resurrection power.
