TODAY’S VERSE
Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed, for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.
Mark 6:50-52 (NIV)
TODAY’S THOUGHT
The disciples were in the boat crossing the Sea of Galilee. Jesus told them to go ahead of him. But a strong wind came up and they were straining, trying to make it across. They were afraid, and then terrified as Jesus approached the boat walking on the water. They were in the Abyss, fighting for their life, and now they thought they saw a ghost. All their sea faring superstitions and primal fears took over and their faith was nowhere to be found. This would not have been so bad, but they just saw Jesus feed five thousand people. They had seen Jesus do countless other miracles and yet the Bible says their heart was hardened. We often think of the “Hard heart” as someone who is jaded or bitter. They don’t care. This is true when referring to being calloused. But the word also means lacking spiritual perception. The disciples were sincere, they were following Jesus, but they were fighting a life of tradition, superstition and legalism. What are you fighting? What is keeping your heart hard? Today, ask God to give you spiritual perception that you may know and enjoy the truth of God’s love and grace.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, soften my heart that I may perceive and receive your truth. Speak to my heart I pray.
AMEN
