She said, “You are the God who sees me.”
Genesis 16:13 (NLT)
What a mess. It could be the script for any modern day soap opera. Sarai cannot have a child so instead of believing God, she tells her husband, Abram, to go ahead and have relations with her servant Hagar. Because of his lack of faith in God’s promise, promise that he and Sarai would have a child, he agrees to Sarai’s plan. Hagar becomes pregnant but unexpectedly Sarai gets jealous and outraged. Hagar, confused and afraid, runs for her life. An angel of God finds her and says, “Return to your mistress, and submit to her authority.” Then he added, “I will give you more descendants than you can count. You are now pregnant and will give birth to a son. You are to name him Ishmael (which means ‘God hears’), for the LORD has heard your cry of distress.” The comforting fact in the midst of all this drama is that God notices Hagar in her pain. He was aware of her plight. Hagar, feeling insignificant and alone is overwhelmed at God’s attention and proclaims, “You are the God who sees me!” And that is enough. His presence heals the sick, calms the storm and raises the dead. His awareness empowers us with the peace that passes all our understanding. Today, know that He notices you! He knows your plight. He hears your prayers. He sees your circumstances and comes to you with the same message of old, “The Lord has heard your cry of distress.” Go in peace.
Dear Father, help me to notice that You notice me. Help me become aware of Your loving presence this day I pray.
