Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?”
Mark 4:38 (NLT)
How often do we think the same thing the disciples thought? It was storming and they thought they were going to die. So they came to a sleeping Jesus and asked Him if He cared that they were going to drown. Now I understand their concern, but why question Christ’s love? Instead they could have asked Him to simply calm the storm. The trouble was, deep in their heart they didn’t think it was an option. We see this when, moments later, Jesus did calm the storm. They were terrified with amazement and said, “Who is this man that even the sea and winds obey Him?” Isn’t that like us? Not only do we doubt that God can help us, so many times we doubt that He wants to! The truth is, He cares. There is an old hymn that says it best, “Does Jesus care when my way is dark with a nameless dread and fear? As the daylight fades into deep night shades, does He care enough to be near? O yes, He cares, I know He cares, His heart is touched with my grief; when the days are weary, the long night dreary, I know my Savior cares.” Today, know He cares for you.
Dear Jesus, how often I am in that boat. Trouble comes and I doubt Your power and Your love. Forgive me. Today, I rebuke the lie that You do not care for me and choose to believe the truth that You love me and care for me deeply. For this I give thanks.
