But Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid! Go ahead and do just what you’ve said, but make a little bread for me first. Then use what’s left to prepare a meal for yourself and your son. For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: There will always be flour and olive oil left in your containers until the time when the LORD sends rain and the crops grow again!”
I Kings 17:13-14 (NLT)
What do you do when your back is up against the wall? It is so easy to get trapped into a “scarcity” model of living. We are so afraid of running out, being alone and not having enough that we plan, connive, worry and protect ourself from any and all harm. On the surface this sounds suburban, smart, the right thing to do. However, if we really examine our behavior and attitudes, we will find out that we are full of worry. Worry is not faith. It is not believing that God really cares about our needs let alone do anything about it. The widow only had a handful of flour left and a little cooking oil when Elijah asked her to cook his meal first. But he asked with a promise. A promise of God that there will always be flour and olive oil left for her and her son. The Bible says she stepped out in faith and believed God. The question is, “Will you?” Today, trust God for all your needs.
Dear Father, it is so easy to worry about my needs. Thank You for Your promise to love me and take care of me. Help me to live a life of faith and trust in You today.
